Turkey - Marmaris Yacht Marine - Winter 2004

As usual, where there are cruisers, there will be parties.  First one of the year was Halloween, which was held at MYM, with both marinas attending.  We were still recovering from the flu, so we only attended for an hour, but there were some good costumes, and it seems everyone had fun.

Thanksgiving dinner (American style) was held at the Pineapple Restaurant near Netsel Marina.  Netsel is a fairly large marina, located right at the edge of Marmaris proper.  As a result, the marina does not provide an on-site restaurant or gathering place.  Most marina users (transient and long-term) enjoy the many and varied restaurants in the city.  But cruisers need a “local”, and the Pineapple has become the de facto eatery/bar for Netsel residents.  As it happens, it has always been one of our favourite restaurants in Marmaris, often providing us with the best döner kebap pite in Turkey (IMHO).  Regretfully, they don’t do döner in the winter.

Döner Kebap

Slices of raw lamb, beef or a combination are stacked on a skewer about 3 feet in length.  The whole business is placed vertically next to a vertical grill, and rotated slowly to cook the meat.  It takes 2-3 hours to get the outer parts done - usually timed for the beginning of the lunch hour.  The meat is then thinly sliced off (vertically), and served as part of a “plate”, on a sandwich roll, in pita bread (our favourite) or in a durum (like a very large flour tortilla).  Sauces, such as tomato, or yogurt and mint, are often added.

In any case, Thanksgiving dinner was superb.  The restaurant clearly knows how to do turkey, and the fixins’ were very well done.  Doug, of Mindemoya, gave a hilarious speech about the origins of Thanksgiving, and an excellent guitarist provided live music throughout the many courses.  We all ate well, drank even better, and danced the night away.
